Rahma was a powerful Sudanese leader who was offered the leadership of the entire Sudan by the British in 1884. However, the order was rescinded by the British government due to his slave-raiding practices. He was later imprisoned in Gibraltar but was allowed to return to Cairo in 1887. After the reconquest of the Sudan in 1899, he was permitted to settle in his native country and wrote his memoirs, which were translated into English as Black Ivory: Or, the Story of El Zubeir Pasha, Slaver and Sultan, as Told By Himself.
